Celebrating the presentation of the first Myrtle Hart Memorial Scholarship were Mrs. Hart's son Charlie and his wife, June; Patient and Family Services Director Greg Ammon; award recipient Scott Markley; and Mrs. Hart's daughter and her husband, Melva, and Paul McClellan.

Charlie Hart and his wife June, who passed away in the summer of 2021, were extremely familiar with Beloit Memorial Hospital's programs and services, and the quality care that Beloit Memorial provides.

Charlie served 12 years as a hospital trustee and spent more than 20 years on the foundation board. Charlie and June were both longtime supporters, and they've both been patients as well.

Yet despite this longstanding familiarity, Charlie and June were amazed by the exceptional care that Beloit Memorial Hospital provides.

"There is an attitude at the hospital that as soon as you walk in the door, everyone wants to take care of your needs," Charlie says. "The care is wonderful."

This high level of concern and care has been especially important to the Harts in recent years, as two very special women in their lives—their mothers—were admitted as patients. The couple is forever thankful for the outstanding care that Rose Thomas-Coats and Myrtle Hart received.

In appreciation and in her mother's memory, June established the Rose Thomas-Coats Memorial Award. The award provides an annual scholarship for nurses to attend continuing education programs that address end-of-life issues.

Then, in 2006, Charlie and his family followed suit. Charlie, his brothers Dale and Dean Hart, and his sister Melva McClellan, established the Myrtle Hart Memorial Scholarship in memory of their mother. It funds continuing education programs for Patient and Family Services staff.

Donor support of Beloit Memorial Hospital's continuing education programs fills a key need, as staff is able to stay current in the treatments and the new technologies that allow hospital patients to "Experience the Difference."

"Beloit Memorial has grown to be such a very strong community hospital, and is so committed to improving," Charlie says. "I am really proud of the progress it has made over the years, and the services that are provided. And we have been so glad to help."
